In anticipation of running the 2003 race season (along with, hopefully
the One Lap of America next year), I went out and bought the future
race car. The S13 coupe is supposed to be about 70lbs lighter than the
eqivalent hatchback, and is supposed to be more rigid. So, despite
Jim's insisting that the coupes
are really ugly, I got a coupe. (All that and mostly because the price
was right.)
Overall, it's not so bad. It came with the engine bay relatively clean
(on top anyway - under the motor is a mucky oily mess!) Body seems
straight, it runs pretty well. Only complaint is that it seems to be a
bit bogged at lower RPM. This could be caused by the noises coming from
the motor. A common problem with the KA24DE is that the timing chain
tensioner wears, and then you get a bunch of noise from chain slap. Well,
that's what I've got. It'll cost around $300 to fix the whole thing,
replacing the chain, tensioner, all gaskets, water pump, thermostat, and
all hoses. Still not a bad price.
Well, here's the pics from the day the owner dropped it off at Tom's
house (temp holding area while I got tags).
Exterior pics. Note, slight damage to the left rear quarter. Not
bad though. Overall, paint is worn (like with a sandblaster). There's
no visible rust, but a lot of small dings.
Interior pics. Normal 150k miles of wear and tear.
Motor pics. It was cleaned up before I looked at it. It looks very
clean, and as of yet, anyway, it still is. Under it is very oily.
However, I don't have any serious leaks that would cause such a mess. My
thought is that 90% or more of the oil sludge was caused by sloppy oil
changes (there's a LOT of mess under the oil filter area). There's also
a small leak in the power steering pump that added to the mess on the
driver's side. I also think that, at some point, some seal blew spraying
oil all over, because the underside of the hood had a nice thin coating.
Well, there will be more to come as I get to work on the car (just to get it ready for inspection.
